Sleep Policy

Sleep time is when needed throughout the day.  Children will go to bed for a sleep when they appear to be getting tired/or at parents’ request.

Teachers will talk with whānau about their child’s sleeping routines and needs.   Pacifiers, Toys/Cuddlies and Sleep sacks may be provided by parents.

No children will go to bed with food or bottles.  No pillows will be used.

Young children in nappies are checked and changed, if required, before bed, and then again after getting up.  Older children who go down for a sleep are first encouraged to go to the toilet.

Teachers will assist children in getting to the sleep room, in removing their outer clothes, shoes and socks ready for sleeping.

Under 2’s belongings will be stored in the child’s cubby in nappy changing area, and over 2’s belongings are stored in their backpacks, or baskets.

Children have their own blankets and sheets – these are kept in named baskets for children who sleep regularly.  Sheets are washed every five sleeps, and this is recorded on the whiteboard in sleeproom.  Blankets are washed regularly.

All children’s sleep times are recorded, and the individual children are checked for warmth, breathing and general well being every ten minutes (or more frequently if necessary).  The time the child is placed into bed, goes to sleep and got up is recorded.

Each check of children is signed off by a teacher with an initial.  Children are also monitored by video surveillance at the five minute beep of the timer from inside the playroom.

Mattress covers and beds will be disinfected every week.
