Nappy Changing/Toileting Procedure

We recognise that any changing of children requires trust and respect between adult and child, and we therefore allow some time before any new teachers, or relievers, change nappies.  To allow our children to maintain dignity we change children in the nappy room away from other children, or encourage older children to change themselves in the bathrooms – rather than in the hallway.  We enjoy engaging the child in the change process through rich conversations, and getting the child to help as much as possible (eg taking off their own socks).

Children in Nappies:

Whānau will supply nappies and wipes, which will be named and stored in the nappy changing area.

Nappies will be regularly checked, particularly before and after sleep.  A soiled/very wet nappy will be changed as soon as possible.

Able children will be encouraged to climb up the change table themselves.

Children are not left unattended on the changing table at any time.

Gloves will be supplied, and used for soiled nappy changes.

When changing nappy, teachers will use wipes and/or nappy cream (when required or advised by parent/caregiver).

Nappies will be disposed of in nappy disposal unit, inside a plastic bag (if soiled).

Nappy change table will be sprayed with disinfectant/bleach spray and wiped with a paper towel.

Hands will be washed and then dried with paper towels.

Change is recorded on nappy changing chart.

Toileting Children:

Regular communication is kept with whānau regarding toileting to retain consistency between home and Preschool, as much as possible.

Children are reminded/taken to the toilet regularly, or as parent/caregiver advises.

Soiled clothes will be bagged, named and placed in child’s backpack.  Soiled clothes (BM) will be double bagged, named, labelled “Soiled”, and then placed in the child’s backpack.

Toileting is recorded on the toileting chart.
