At times there may be the need to change a child’s clothing:

Staff will ensure the child’s dignity is respected at all times

The child will be changed in the toilet room or nappy change area

Any soiled clothes will be place in a plastic bag (double if needed), sealed, named and placed in child’s bag

Any soiled cloths will be separately disinfected before being laundered or disposed of in the rubbish bin

Parents/Caregivers will be informed when a child has been changed, and change written up on toileting record (if appropriate).

At times there may be the need to clean a child more thoroughly and therefore a shower may be required:

Staff will ensure the child’s dignity is respected at all times if a shower is needed

Staff will shower the child using soap/soap substitute

The child will be dried (using the coloured towels) and dressed in clean clothes.

Any soiled clothes will be placed in a plastic bag (double if necessary), sealed, named and placed in the child’s bag

The tub will be cleaned down with disinfectant

Any soiled cloths will be separately disinfected before being laundered or disposed of in the rubbish bin

Parents/Caregivers will be informed when a child has been showered.

At times there may be the need to clean up blood:

Gloves are to be worn when dealing with blood

A child who is bleeding will be isolated with a staff member who will clean them up while any other blood will be cleaned by another staff member

Blood will be cleaned up using paper towels (or chux cloths if necessary) and Janola

Cloths etc soiled by blood will be disposed of in the rubbish bin

The cause of blood will be recorded in the incident/accident book and parent will be informed
