Accident and Illness Procedure

Teachers will have an up to date First Aid certificate and will be aware of allergy procedures/children.

Office Manager will ensure that all children’s records have up to date parent/emergency contact numbers.

In the case of an accident or serious illness of a child or adult immediate medical aid will be given or called for without delay. Parents/caregivers will be contacted in all instances.

Accidents will be recorded in the accident book and parents/caregivers informed.

After an unidentifiable episode of vomiting/or diarrhea, staff and children are to be excluded from Preschool until they are symptom free for 48 hours, as recommended by the Medical Officer of Health.

Parents/caregivers will be contacted and asked to arrange for their child to leave the preschool if their child vomits, has had more than two loose bowel motions and/or has a temperature or is obviously unwell. Until the parent/caregiver arrives the child will be isolated in the office as per regulation 28 (3).

When a child vomits –

  • Child is isolated with staff member, given towel/bucket.
  • Gloves to be used while dealing with vomit.
  • Staff member will help to clean child, vomit using paper towels, cloths and disinfectant solution made with Janola.
  • Soiled clothes will be placed in double plastic bag for parents/caregivers.
  • Soiled cloths will be thrown out.
  • Parent/caregiver will be contacted to collect their child from preschool. Parent will be reminded that child needs to be away for 48 hours.

When a child has diarrhea-

  • Child will be cleaned up. Staff will ensure that the child’s dignity is respected at all times.
  • If needed the child will be showered.
  • Child will be dried and new clothes put on.
  • Any soiled clothes will be placed in a double plastic bag.
  • Soiled cloths will be thrown out.
  • Child will be isolated in the office with a staff member.
  • Parent/caregiver will be contacted to collect child. They will be reminded about the 48 hours exclusion.

When a child has an accident (an accident is classed as when first aid is administered).

  • Assess whether gloves needed.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Console child.
  • Blood will be cleaned up using Janola mixture and disposable cloths.
  • Parent will be notified.
  • Accident will be noted in accident book.

All parents will be given a copy of this procedure when they enroll their child/ren.

We will notify Public Health south in the case of any serious illness or an illness that is listed by them.

Serious illnesses will be noted in the accident book.
